Aave Sunsets Avara, Winds Down Family Wallet to Refocus on DeFi

News Aave Labs will retire its Avara umbrella brand and consolidate all current and future products under Aave Labs, while phasing out the Family wallet iOS app as it narrows its focus on decentralized finance.

Aave founder and CEO Stani Kulechov said in a post on X on Tuesday that Avara — which oversaw projects including the Family crypto wallet and previously the Lens social platform — is no longer needed as the company prioritizes bringing Aave to a broader user base.

Kulechov added that the Apple iOS-based Family wallet is being decommissioned after the team concluded that onboarding large numbers of users requires purpose-built experiences, such as savings-focused products, rather than general-purpose wallets.

The shift follows last month’s transfer of stewardship of the Lens protocol to Mask Network, with Aave moving to an advisory role to concentrate resources on DeFi.

All products to operate under Aave Labs

In a blog post, Avara said that all current and future offerings — including the Aave App, Aave Pro, and Aave Kit — will run under Aave Labs to streamline branding.

Accounts associated with Family wallets will remain supported as core infrastructure within Aave Labs products, the company said, though the iOS application will be wound down over the next year. New user sign-ups will stop on April 1, and existing users can continue using the app until April 1, 2027. Users will retain full access to their funds via Aave’s website.

Aave is the largest DeFi protocol with $30 billion in total value locked, nearly $9 billion more than the next-largest project, staking protocol Lido, which has $21.7 billion in TVL, according to DefiLlama. The Aave (AAVE) token traded largely unchanged over the past day, down 0.7% in the last 24 hours at $127.40, according to CoinGecko.
