Coinbase’s Base App Ends Creator Rewards to Focus on Trading

Original Content:

Coinbase’s “Everything App,” Base App, will discontinue its Creator Rewards program and its Farcaster-powered social feed as it shifts focus exclusively to tradable assets.

Introduced in July, the Creator Rewards initiative aimed to make the Ethereum layer-2 Base more social by tying activity and engagement to earnings. In a post on Monday, Base App’s account on X reported that approximately $450,000 had been distributed to 17,000 creators over seven months, with data indicating an average payout of $26 per creator.

Base creator Jesse Pollak said that following the public rollout of Base App in December, the team concluded it needed to narrow its scope to execute more effectively, adding that the app’s primary focus will be trading.

The Creator Rewards program will conclude on Sunday, with final payouts scheduled for Feb. 18.

Regarding Farcaster, Pollak said Base App was not an ideal fit for the talk feed feature. He added that he intends to keep supporting the decentralized social network and its developer ecosystem and expects users to return to the Farcaster app, which he described as offering a leading interface.

Base App positioned at the core of Coinbase’s strategy

The renewed emphasis on tradable assets is consistent with Coinbase’s broader goal to build an “Everything App” spanning spot and derivatives trading, stablecoins, real-world asset tokenization, prediction markets, and additional services.

Base App, a self-custody wallet and all-in-one application, officially launched in December after several months in beta and supports part of that trading experience.

Coinbase had previously floated the idea of a Base token, though CEO Brian Armstrong and Pollak have not commented on that possibility in recent months.

The discontinuation of Creator Rewards does not impact Base App’s Creator Coins program, which enables users to issue ERC-20 tokens linked to their Base App profiles and the decentralized social media platform Zora.
