Arkham Exchange will not shut down and is instead transitioning from a centralized model to a fully decentralized trading platform, CEO Miguel Morel said on Wednesday, addressing reports that suggested the platform was closing.

The venue, launched in 2024 by data analytics firm Arkham Intelligence, supports spot cryptocurrency trading and perpetual contracts. A mobile application was introduced in late 2025. Average daily trading volume is around $640,000, according to CoinGecko.

“The future of crypto trading is decentralized, and that’s what we’re building towards,” Morel said.

Centralized platforms seen as “unresponsive” to user needs

The shift to a DEX comes amid heightened scrutiny of how centralized exchanges handle token listings, as decentralized alternatives are increasingly viewed as more flexible and open.

“Centralized incumbents have become bloated and unresponsive to user needs, becoming worse than the traditional financial systems they pretend to improve on,” Morel said, adding: “We don’t want to invest in that.”

The move aligns with broader market dynamics. DEX-to-CEX trading volume ratios hit new highs in 2025 after more than tripling since 2020, according to CoinGecko.

Perpetual DEXs also posted strong growth in 2025, with volumes nearly tripling from $4.1 trillion at the start of the year to as much as $12 trillion, reflecting a significant rise in onchain derivatives activity and a greater share of leveraged crypto trading.

“Decentralized trading, especially for perpetuals, has exploded because it is a return to what made crypto so exciting in the first place,” Morel said, adding: “It is cheaper, faster, and gives users custody of their own assets. We are excited about returning to the financial frontier and delivering the best trading experience for our users.”

Arkham did not immediately provide further details on the timeline for its transition to a DEX.
