Bitcoin Hits $93K as Trump Signals Possible Colombia Action

Bitcoin climbed above $93,000 on Monday as U.S. President Donald Trump suggested Colombia and Mexico could be potential targets for U.S. military action following the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on Saturday, adding to geopolitical uncertainty in the region.

On Sunday, Trump alleged that cocaine continues to enter the United States from Colombia and suggested Colombian President Gustavo Petro could be targeted next. “Colombia is very sick, too, run by a sick man, who likes making cocaine and selling it to the United States, and he’s not going to be doing it very long,” Trump said.

When asked whether the United States would consider a military operation in Colombia, Trump replied, “It sounds good to me.” The exchange was circulated in a video posted on Jan. 5, 2026, by The Kobeissi Letter on X.

Trump also commented on Mexico, noting generally positive ties with President Claudia Sheinbaum but stating she declined assistance to combat cartel violence. “Something is going to have to be done in Mexico,” he added.

The administration is also monitoring Cuba, a Venezuelan ally. Trump described Cuba as a failing state “ready to fall” amid reduced oil support from Venezuela.

Maduro seized before markets could react

Bitcoin (BTC) has risen 3.35% from $89,990 to $93,000 since the operation in Venezuela, according to CoinGecko data.

Market analyst Crypto Rover said the event caused limited market disruption because Maduro’s capture occurred before uncertainty spread, contrasting with previous conflicts that led to extended risk-off moves.

Greenland remains a strategic focus

Trump reiterated interest in Greenland, calling the territory important for U.S. national security and defense. Ministers in Denmark and Norway have repeatedly said the mineral-rich island is not for sale and urged the U.S. president to halt threats.
