Bitcoin miner CleanSpark said it has agreed to acquire land in Texas as part of a plan to expand into artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC).

In an announcement on Wednesday, the company said it entered a definitive agreement to purchase 447 acres in Brazoria County, Texas, to develop a 300 megawatt (MW) data center, with potential expansion to 600 MW. Together with another project in the area, the facilities are designed to support AI and HPC workloads.

CleanSpark chairman and CEO Matt Schultz said demand for scaled, AI-native compute is accelerating, while access to transmission-level power in strategically important regions is becoming more constrained.

The move extends a broader trend of Bitcoin miners diversifying amid rising mining difficulty. Companies including MARA Holdings, Core Scientific, Hut 8, Riot Platforms, and TeraWulf have repurposed parts of their infrastructure or announced plans to expand into AI and HPC.

Some mining firms are also testing ways to reduce costs through greener initiatives. Canadian Bitcoin miner Canaan said last week it would join a proof-of-concept program to supply compute heat for local greenhouses.

CleanSpark said the Texas transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2026.

Bitcoin mining difficulty hit record highs in 2025

These developments come amid higher costs to mine Bitcoin (BTC). According to CoinWarz, network difficulty peaked at about 156 trillion in November and was 146 trillion at the time of publication.
