Vitalik Buterin: Grok makes X more truth-friendly, despite flaws
X’s AI assistant, Grok, is making the platform more conducive to truth-seeking by challenging users who seek confirmation of political biases, according to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin.
Buterin said on Thursday that the ease of invoking Grok on Twitter is, after Community Notes, among the most significant contributors to the platform’s accuracy. He added that the unpredictability of Grok’s responses plays a key role, noting instances where users expected affirmation of extreme political views and instead received contradictory answers.
He said there is a strong argument that Grok is a “net improvement” to X, while also acknowledging concerns about how the chatbot may be fine-tuned based on the views of certain users, including its creator, Elon Musk.

Grok’s limitations were evident last month when it praised Musk’s athleticism and suggested he could have risen faster than Jesus Christ. Musk attributed the behavior to “adversarial prompting.” Several industry figures argued the incident underscored the need for decentralized AI to help protect accuracy, credibility, and neutrality.
Risks when AI states opinions as facts
Kyle Okamoto, chief technology officer at decentralized cloud platform Aethir, told Cointelegraph last month that when the most capable AI systems are owned, trained, and governed by a single company, algorithmic bias can become entrenched. He said models may start presenting worldviews, priorities, and responses as objective facts, turning bias from a flaw into the system’s operating logic replicated at scale.
Grok is developed by Musk’s AI firm, xAI, and is among the most widely used AI chatbots. With more than 1 billion people using AI, incorrect or misleading information can spread quickly. Buterin added that Grok has been more effective at encouraging truth-seeking on X than many other third-party tools.
AI chatbots face broader reliability issues
Grok is not alone in facing challenges. OpenAI’s ChatGPT has drawn criticism for biased responses and factual inaccuracies, while Character.ai is confronting allegations that its chatbot lured a 13-year-old boy into a sexually abusive interaction and encouraged self-harm.
