X to Launch Smart Cashtags for Crypto and Stocks Next Month
X plans to introduce a “Smart Cashtags” feature next month, offering real-time price tracking for cryptocurrencies and stocks, with early concepts also indicating potential in-app trading functionality.

In a post on Sunday, head of product Nikita Bier said users would be able to view smart contract data associated with crypto tokens. Each asset page is expected to include “mentions” that surface recent conversations and news about the companies or teams involved. Bier added that X aims to gather user feedback ahead of a public launch targeted for February.

The move aligns with owner Elon Musk’s broader strategy to evolve X into an “Everything App,” a vision he has pursued since acquiring the platform in October 2022.
X’s second attempt at a Cashtags feature
X debuted a Cashtags tool in December 2022 that displayed price charts for Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), leading stocks, and exchange-traded funds, sourced from TradingView, with a “View on Robinhood” link. That implementation was later removed.
The forthcoming “Smart Cashtags” appear to expand functionality. A concept image showed “Buy” and “Sell” buttons, though X has not provided details on how these would operate or when trading capabilities might go live.
Separately, X has obtained money transmitter licenses in at least 25 US states. It remains unclear when the platform might enable payments, including those involving crypto.
Allegations of reduced visibility for crypto content
The announcement follows recent complaints from segments of the crypto community alleging that legitimate crypto posts were being downranked while spam content proliferated. Bier disputed the claims in a post that has since been deleted, describing the criticism as a myth.
Musk said the company plans to make X’s recommendation algorithm open source within the next week.
