ZKsync Lite to Sunset in 2026 as Ethereum’s First ZK-Rollup
ZKsync plans to retire ZKsync Lite, also known as ZKsync 1.0 and the first zero-knowledge rollup launched on Ethereum, in 2026. The team described the move as a planned, orderly sunset that will not impact other ZKsync systems, according to a post on X on Sunday.
The team said ZKsync Lite functioned as a groundbreaking proof of concept that validated key approaches for building production-grade zero-knowledge systems, paving the way for subsequent iterations.
Matter Labs introduced ZKsync Lite in 2020 to enable fast transfers and the minting of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The network did not support smart contracts, which limited its capabilities.

The network was the first to implement validity proofs that immediately verified transaction correctness before batching and submitting transactions to the Ethereum mainnet for final confirmation.
Matter Labs ended active development on ZKsync Lite in early 2023 after launching ZKsync Era, its zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zkEVM) that supports smart contracts.
ZKsync said no immediate steps are required from ZKsync Lite users and the network continues to operate normally. The team added that funds remain secure, withdrawals to L1 will continue during the process, and other products are unaffected. It plans to provide specific timelines and migration guidance soon.
Just under $50 million is currently bridged to ZKsync Lite, according to DefiLlama. L2BEAT data shows the network recorded just over 330 user operations in the past day.
By comparison, DefiLlama reports ZKsync Era has $36.4 million in total value locked in decentralized finance, with L2BEAT indicating it processed over 22,000 user operations over the past day.
Additional changes to the ZKsync ecosystem may be considered. Last month, co-creator Alex Gluchowski proposed revising the ZKsync (ZK) governance token to focus on “economic utility,” linking the token to network fees.
